“My van was turned over. 22 seconds it took them to get into my van. Four and a half minutes to empty it. 12 to 15 grand’s worth of gear gone.” Stephen Baker, Tradesman, speaking at a Parliamentary breakfast reception, March 2025.
For many tradespeople across the UK, tool theft isn’t just a serious financial blow, it’s a devastating interruption to their working life. Here at ProtectAVan, we’re right behind the #StopToolTheft campaign. That’s because we know what’s at stake: your tools, your time… and your trade.
Whether it’s expert security advice, installing innovative new products, or turning up and campaigning at events, we’re putting everything we’ve got behind this movement.
Getting out on the front line
We’ve been out on the road with our sister company TVL Security, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Metropolitan Police, SelectaDNA, The Gas Expert, and Stolen Tools UK, supporting the country’s tradespeople with tool marking and practical, immediate ways to improve their van security.
Recent highlights include a packed Toolstation event at the Acorn Industrial Estate, where we had sunshine to go with the solid advice and serious chat. With a constant stream of tradespeople stopping by to talk about their experiences, get their tools marked, and check out new security options, it’s clear the message is getting through – and fast.
Huge thanks go to everyone who helped make these events a success. These events aren't just about raising awareness - they're about giving people the knowledge - and the tools - to fight back.
An unforgettable rally in the heart of Westminster
One of the most powerful moments so far came at the #StopToolTheft rally, where hundreds of tradespeople filled Parliament Square to send a message to Westminster: tool theft is ruining lives, and the law has to catch up fast.
The turnout on the day was inspiring – as was the passion behind the call for real legislative change – including stronger penalties for thieves, better support for enforcement, and recognition that it’s not just tools we’re talking about, it’s livelihoods.
We're incredibly proud to have played our part, but want to thank all those invloved - especially Trades United, The Gas Expert and Stolen Tools UK for thier tireless work behind the scenes, not to mention the media teams who helped amplity the message far and wide.
Driving change inside Parliament
The momentum continued, from the rally all the way to the halls of Parliament itself. A Parliamentary breakfast reception hosted by On The Tools, saw tradespeople and campaigners joined by MPs and industry leaders – all coming together to demand stronger protections.
Amanda Martin, MP for Portsmouth North, is leading the call for change and tougher sentencing. Her proposed bill aims to close the gap between the impact of tool theft and the light punishments currently handed out – a key issue for everyone in the trade.
And let's not forget: 1 in 10 tradespeople will fall victim to tool theft this year. If you haven't signed the petition, now's the time to take actions - sign the petition here.
We’re not done yet – and neither is the campaign
We’ve made serious progress – but there’s more to do. At ProtectAVan, we’re committed to keeping the pressure on, whether that’s supporting more tool marking events, innovating better van protection products, or working with our partners to raise awareness in every corner of the UK.
Make sure you’re following us for updates on future events where you’ll be able to get expert advice, free tool marking kits, and practical tips on how to defend your tools and your trade.
Together, we can protect what matters.
